What will I do as a Customer Delivery Driver?

As a Customer Delivery Driver, you’ll carry out daily tasks such as:

  • Carrying out vehicle checks
  • Loading deliveries
  • Travelling out on the roads
  • Delivering groceries to the customers door
  • Unpacking their foods
  • Picking customer orders back in the shop or warehouse

Jobs based in our supermarkets include a blend of driving and working on the shop floor where you’ll be continuing to deliver that superb customer service. If you’re someone who loves variety, then this could be a great fit for you.

Customer Delivery Drivers based at our custom-built DotCom Fulfilment Centre handle online orders and delivery around London. They’ll find their role more focused on delivery and driving but may still support the team in the warehouse by picking orders when needed.

Who will I work with as part of the Customer Delivery Driving team?

As a Customer Delivery Driver, you will likely spend quite a lot of time out on the road, but you’ll also be closely supported by other Driving Partners, Team Managers and our nationwide expertise in distribution and delivery.

In one of our Waitrose & Partners shops, you’ll be part of a supportive team in-store, working with directly with Supermarket Assistants, Food Service Partners and Managers

while also being able to give direct service to customers both around the shop and on their doorstep.

Our Dotcom Fulfilment Centre fulfils over 10,000 deliveries a week. Here, you’ll work in a more specialised Delivery and Transport environment alongside our team of Warehouse Partners and LGV Drivers.

Is there an age restriction for being a professional driver and which licence do I need?

You’ll need to be over 18 years old, and have a full manual UK driving licence with no more than 6 points. As part of the application process, you will need to take an Online Driving Assessment that will look at your driving history, attitude, knowledge and awareness to hazards. There may also be further tests carried out in our stores or at the DotCom Fulfillment Centre such as vision or your ability to manoeuvre a larger vehicle.

Is previous experience required?

No. Previous experience is not essential. If you’re a careful and considerate driver who can deliver our outstanding service right to our customers’ doors then we’ll welcome your application.

What training and progression is available?

At the John Lewis Partnership, we’re committed to developing our Partners. That means that if you bring us these skills and great characteristics then we’ll give you all the training and development you need to go far with us.

Someone who starts out in a Customer Delivery Driving job could find themselves progressing further in their Transport career to be a Driving Assessor, Team Manager, Shift Manager or Transport Hiring Manager. Partners may also be able cross over into different jobs in other areas of John Lewis & Partners and Waitrose & Partners, and find roles in areas such as LGV Driving, Retail, or in our Warehouses.
